MRI in Eugene and Lane County

About Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging allows physicians to observe detailed images of your body’s internal organs, muscles, nerves, and other soft tissues. Images are produced using a magnetic field and radio waves, unlike x-ray equipment that uses radiation to obtain images. MRI may save you from the cost of hospitalization and, in many cases, the cost of numerous additional tests.

Why Your Doctor Will Order an MRI

Your doctor will order an MRI for many reasons. Some of the reasons are to see:

  • Headaches
  • Signs of a stroke
  • Vessel blockage in your neck or head
  • Pain in your back or neck
  • Knee or shoulder pain

Process and Results

Once you meet the technician and your questions have been answered, you will be asked to lay on a padded table. The table will raise and automatically position you for the exam in the tube-like cylinder. You will be able to communicate with the technician via an intercom system.

Once in place, a radio wave is emitted which captures the images of your body at various angles at one time. The release of the radio wave will create a thumping noise. To help you feel comfortable, you may listen to music to help pass the time, as well as soften the thumping sound.

The only thing that you must do during the scan is to lay completely motionless. Any movement during the scanning process may blur the images, diminish the quality, and interfere with interpretation of the exam making it necessary to repeat parts of the scan.

A trained physician will analyze the images and send the results of the scan to your referring physician who will review the findings with you.
