Offering the ONLY 3.0 Tesla Ultra High Field whole-body MRI scanner in Lane County is a dream that has come to fruition for many physicians and their patients.
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This is state-of-the-art imaging that allows physicians to observe detailed images of your body's internal organs, muscles, nerves and other soft tissues. MRI images are produced using magnetic field and radio waves unlike x-ray equipment that uses radiation to obtain images. MRI imaging may save the cost of hospitalizations and, in many cases, the cost of numerous additional tests.
To date, there are no known adverse side effects of MRI. The scanner has full approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The MRI examination is generally painless and causes little or no discomfort to you.
Once you have been introduced to the technologist and your questions have been answered, you will lie on a padded table. The table will raise and automatically position you for the exam in the tube-like cylinder. You will be able to communicate with the technologist via an intercom system. Once in place, a radio wave is emitted which captures the images of your body at various angles at one time. The release of the radio wave will create a thumping noise. To help you feel comfortable, you may listen to music to help pass the time, as well as soften the thumping noise.
The only thing that you must do during the scan is to lie completely motionless. Any movement during the scanning process may blur the images, diminish the quality, and interfere with interpretation of the exam making it necessary to repeat parts of the scan.
The images will be analyzed by a physician trained in magnetic resonance imaging. The results of the scan will be relayed to your referring physician who will review the findings with you.
